Health Inequalities Project

The Health Inequalities Project, launched in January 2023, has helped residents access services and support that many of us take for granted. Health inequalities have persisted in Sutton for many years but they became more apparent during the Covid-19 pandemic. For example, there are higher levels of high blood pressure, diabetes and other long term health conditions in the Benhill, Shanklin, St Helier and Roundshaw estates and surrounding areas.

Our Community Development team have been supporting organisations to grow, secure funding, and create healthy initiatives to enable them to offer more healthy activities to residents.

By supporting local organisations and working with the residents we’ve brought communities together and helped empower residents to lead healthier lives. From supporting Tamil women in accessing mental health services to establishing community events and drop-in’s, our work is making a real difference.

  • Shanklin Estate

Our team has helped bring local Tamil communities together with mental health support  as previously women members of the community did not feel able ask for help.

  • St Helier Estate

Our team supported the St Helier Charitable Foundation become a registered charity, they hold regular events and including healthy activities for residents on the estate.

  • Roundshaw Estate

Our team supported St Paul’s Church to set up a weekly drop in where residents can access services and local support groups.

  • Benhill Estate

Our team worked in partnership with local services and residents to create the annual Benhill Community Fun Day and has been working with a small group of estate residents to increase the volunteering and community action on the estate.
