New moon gate and temporary garden will celebrate community diversity across Sutton

A ‘moon gate’ installation is being created at Trinity Square in Sutton town centre to showcase communities’ harvest festivals and champion the rich diversity in Sutton.

A moon gate is a circular opening that acts as a gateway - it is a traditional architectural element in Eastern gardens. Visitors will be able to walk through the striking structure, explore the garden and learn about the experiences of people who have settled in Sutton.

Sutton Council is working with the London Festival of Architecture (LFA), and designer Adrienne Lau from Edgy Collective to create the interactive installation. The town centre Successful Sutton Business Improvement District will support with community engagement.

This month, engagement events will be taking place to help inspire the design of the moon gate. During the events people will be asked to draw and write down their experiences on a large canvas, bringing to life their experiences in Sutton or how they like to welcome people to the local community.

All Sutton residents are welcome to come along to the event listed below:

The installation will be in place to debut and welcome people at the Mid-Autumn (Moon) Festival Celebration on 17 September.

The moon gate will be in-place for at least one month before being moved to a permanent location.

Adrienne Lau from Edgy Collective said:

“The design will reflect the culture and heritage of Sutton’s diverse communities - with particular focus on the growing migration in Sutton - to foster a sense of belonging and connection.

“Working with local stakeholders, alongside the LFA and the Council, our team will be supported in developing a design that is relevant to Sutton’s people and places.”

Patricia Park, Chief Executive Officer of Sutton Town Centre’s Business Improvement District, said:

“It is wonderful that Sutton recognises its growing community, its rich heritage and culture through what we are sure will be a striking art installation in this part of the High Street.

“It will be a real point of interest for visitors to enjoy. We look forward to joining this celebration and encourage as many as possible to participate in the workshops this month.”
